Celebrating Local History

Celebrating Local History was launched in early 2006 by local TV presenter Joe Mahon at Clifton House in Belfast and received considerable media attention throughout the Province. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project, which is organised by the Local History Panel of LISC (NI), encourages people to explore the rich history of their local area. It also aims to highlight the wealth and range of resources for appreciating family and community history which are available in our libraries, archives and museums.
Most of us are curious to know more about our roots and where we live. Indeed the strong identity with place in Northern Ireland - whether a town neighbourhood, a village or a townland - strengthens the desire to look back in time and to understand how we came to be what we are as individuals and communities.
One of the major activities of the project has been a touring exhibition on Celebrating Local History - ‘People, Place and Time’. Since July 2006 two exhibitions have been hosted simultaneously at a number of libraries and museums throughout Northern Ireland. They show the wealth of information available on places and communities by featuring the local histories of such diverse locations as Mussenden Temple, Killyleagh, Sion Mills, Island Magee, Lurgan and Devenish Island. Look out for the exhibition panels at a venue near you and be inspired to follow up your own interests in local history.

A series of calendars of local history events throughout Northern Ireland has also been produced as part of the Celebrating Local History Project - check for copies in your local library or museum or in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland.
The website www.celebratinglocalhistory.co.uk lists all the events and the venues of the Celebrating Local History exhibitions as well as information on how to get started on studying local history. A Resource Pack of information on local history sources is being produced and will be available through local libraries and historical societies from summer 2007.
Through co-ordinating many events and activities, Celebrating Local History seeks to encourage people throughout Northern Ireland to get involved in local history and to provide advice and guidance on getting started on the journey of discovery into the history of their localities. There is no lack of resources in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, in all our libraries and in local and national museums where staff will be only too willing to advise and guide you.
