What is the Northern Ireland Publications Resource?
NIPR is an initiative sponsored by the Library & Information Services Council (Northern Ireland) with funding from the Department of Culture, Arts & Leisure (DCAL). It aims to acquire and preserve every book, pamphlet, periodical and report published in Northern Ireland since January 2000 and create an accompanying bibliography.
The majority of material published in the Province is now collected, catalogued and preserved in the Northern Ireland Publications Resource. Bibliographic information about the collection is available via the NIPR website www.nibooks.org. Belfast Central Library and the Linen Hall Library, Belfast are the two lead partners in NIPR and dedicated repositories have been set up within these institutions to house the collection.
Voluntary donation
Because NIPR does not have legal deposit status it relies heavily on the generosity of the local publishing community. Publishers are asked to donate two copies of everything they have published since 2000; so one copy can be preserved for posterity while the other will be available for public consultation. Both Belfast Central Library and the Linen Hall Library continue to operate their own acquisitions policy with regard to local publications. Donations of publications to NIPR should be clearly marked 'FAO NIPR' and left in either library.
Why should publishers participate?
In return for donating their material, NIPR will help publishers market their work by advertising the publications internationally through its online catalogue. A link to the publishers website will also be added to www.nibooks.org. NIPR guarantees that all material deposited into its care will be preserved for posterity
Thanks to the generosity of local publishers NIPR is building an archive of Northern Ireland's unique publishing heritage.
Accessing the Collection
You may consult material in the NIPR collection personally by asking at the counter in either the Linen Hall Library or Belfast Central Library (depending on location given in the online catalogue). If you cannot visit the NIPR repository in person, you can request NIPR material through Inter Library Loan at any library.
