Professional Qualifications

LISC has been working with the University of Ulster's School of Education on the development of locally based library and information management qualifications since 2005. Initially, the School offered a Certificate in School Library Management but this has undergone further development into a full Masters programme in generic Library and Information Management offered on a part-time basis over three years.

In Year 1 students take two modules at Certificate Level:

  • The Library in its Environment
  • Improving Library Practice

In Year 2 a further two modules make up the Diploma

  • Leadership in Libraries for the Future
  • Research Initiation and Design

The final module, taken in Year 3 requires completion of a dissertation to receive the Masters award.

LISC's Library Education Advisory Group continues to work closely with the School of Education in refining and updating the syllabus for the course programme. CILIP has been consulted at all stages of course development. CILIP accreditation for the Post-graduate Diploma is being sought in autumn 2009.

Further information on the course programme is available from prospectus.ulster.ac.uk/course/?id=6749
